Care & Advice

FABRICS

PATTERN MATCH

All pattern repeats are approximate. This is due to the many processes the fabric must pass through during manufacture which can lead to slight variations in the pattern repeat from roll to roll.

DYE LOT VARIATION

Variations in colour may occur from shipment to shipment. If the colour match is critical we would suggest that your customer inspects the fabric before it is cut.

COLOUR MATCHING

Please examine carefully before cutting to verify that colour, pattern, etc are as ordered. Since no two print runs or dye lots can be colour matched identically during processing, there is bound to be a slight amount of variation. We will, however, always attempt to ship a satisfactory commercial match. Any fabric that is cut cannot be accepted for return.

COLOUR FASTNESS

No fabric is completely fade resistant. We are careful to purchase fabrics that meet industry standards. Great care should be taken not to expose fabrics to direct or reflective light.

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS

11 to 12 Stitches per 25mm (1”) are required on all fabrics. A selvedge of 20mm, (3/4”) must be taken for sewing fabrics.

FABRIC LONGEVITY

We believe that fabrics used on fixed seat upholstery will not have the same longevity as fabrics used on furniture with reversible seat cushions. Therefore, it is important to select fabrics from a higher performance category rating 3 or 4 (or a high rub test result) to achieve a reasonable degree of longevity on this type of furniture.

WASHED FABRICS

We recommend that fabrics washed during the process of manufacture should thereafter be dry-cleaned. Please note these fabrics tend to vary slightly in width and texture from shipment to shipment. Also the pattern match may vary slightly as the amount of shrinkage that occurs in the washing process cannot be controlled.

LINEN

Due to the natural character of flax fibre, whose colour mainly depends on weather conditions during the growing and retting processes, there will always be a colour variation between lots.

VELVETS

Velvets should not be railroaded, as the cut pile surface may shade significantly. Pile direction for velvets should be applied to furniture, including cushions, in one consistent vertical direction. We also strongly advise the use of a barrier cloth lining or Dacron wrap between foam and velvet.

SOIL RESISTANT APPLICATION

Fabrics already treated with a soil resistant application at the time of manufacture should not be re-treated again within two years. While we accept that a general fabric protector can be applied without damaging fabric, the mis-application or over-application of fabric protector can lead to damage on certain fabrics. Such damage is not the responsibility of the fabric supplier. Therefore, we can only support the application of fabric protector in the following circumstances:

  1. Only water-based or odourless mineral spirits-based product are used.
  2. The product is be manufactured and supplied by a reputable manufacturer and supplier and has been properly tested and shown to be effective and not to cause damage to fabrics.
  3. The applicator is trained and holds IICRC certification for upholstery cleaning (or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification).
  4. The applicator pre-tests the fabric protector in an inconspicuous location on the upholstery to ensure that no damage will result before proceeding.
  5. The product is applied in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.
  6. Fabric protector is not applied to Flock fabric or Wax finish or Chrome Tanned leather. Provided the above conditions are met, we have no difficulty approving the application of fabric protector and such application will not effect the standard warranties which apply.

FABRIC PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES

All fabrics are rated in performance categories. These categories are determined by various simulated tests, the results of which determine the category the fabric fits into. These tests include rub tests, abrasion resistance, seam strength, pilling resistance and colourfastness to light. These ratings are determined by an independent Australasian standard (AS2687). This is to help guide customer needs towards the correct choice.

  1. DECORATIVE: Recommended for drapery, bedspreads and decorative upholstery.
  2. GENERAL DOMESTIC: Recommended for areas where adults subject the furniture to regular use, but not constant use by the whole family.
  3. HEAVY DOMESTIC/GENERAL COMMERCIAL: Recommended for areas where the furniture is subjected to heavy use from the whole family. Fabrics are suitable for most office commercial areas i.e. reception, visitors, meeting rooms, boardrooms together with hotel/motel/apartment and retirement village applications.
  4. HEAVY COMMERCIAL: Fabrics are suitable for all of the above commercial areas with the addition of task chair seating in office commercial and hotel/ motel public spaces.

These codes do not constitute a guarantee of durability as every piece of fabric is subjected to different use. It does however indicate that the fabric in question has met fabric industry performance standards.

CARING FOR YOUR TEXTILIA FABRICS

All fabrics should be protected from direct and refracted sunlight to ensure optimum performance. Vacuum upholstery regularly using low suction. Rotate reversible cushions regularly. For specific care instructions on any of our fabric designs or leather articles, please refer to the care labels detailed below. These care labels are those which have been adopted by the New Zealand Furniture Manufacturers Association. The relevant care label is despatched with each item within an order.

PLEASE NOTE: Any soil resistant application that is applied to the fabric after the sale there of mean these cleaning instructions no longer apply.

LEATHER

CONDITIONS TO AVOID

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Don’t place furniture too close to a heat source. Make sure there is a minimum distance of 1 meter. Pet’s claws and sharp objects including footwear may cut your leather. Common cleaning materials can cause severe damage and costly repairs. Paints, solvents, nail varnish, dyes, felt pens etc can cause serious damage. Avoid the use of dyed cloths unless you are sure it is dye-fast when wet. Perspiration, grime, body oils, hair creams or gels will damage leather if not removed. Protect from direct sunlight, direct heat and weather. Hard or sharp objects can cause damage.

Non-colourfast clothing can transfer colour to the leather surface. DO NOT WASH. DO NOT DRY CLEAN.

REGULAR CARE

Areas in direct body contact such as arms, head rests, seat cushions, should be treated weekly following care instructions listed below. Do not remove any part for separate cleaning. Vacuum then wipe down once a week with a clean, dyefast cloth to remove dust, grime and perspiration, and before using any cleaning products. Avoid hard rubbing or scrubbing. Do not saturate your leather. The accumulation of body/hair oil, dirt and grime will accelerate wear causing both discolouration and surface damage. Use only leather care products suitable for coated, waxed, aniline and semi aniline leather and strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s. Do not use shoe, floor or laundry cleaners. Do not use shoe cream or saddlery products. Do not use solvents or cleaning fluid. Do not use abrasive powder or paste cleaners. Do not use floor, furniture or shoe polishes. Pellé master kits for leather care are suitable for cleaning. Dry away from direct heat. In addition, for nubuck (suede finish) leather, brush the nap in wear areas. Pellé master suede kits for suede care are suitable.

SPOT CLEANING

Remove spillages quickly, by soaking up with a dye fast cloth. Clean as above. Persistent stains may require treatment by a professional cleaner.
